This is a modern simple composition with the plain white teapot and jug standing out well against the dark grey background.  The lemon and bowl add the colour which livens up the painting.  White ceramic glazed objects tend to reflect the light from their surroundings, hence the grey colour.  The jug is standing on a Charles Dickens novel, bound in green leather.
