Having bought some lovely juicy red plums I decided to use them before they were eaten in a still life set up. After several attempts at finding a suitable composition I found this one which attracted me by the shapes and colours. The dark green of the old bottle coupled with the subdued blue of the book seemed to blend nicely with the red of the plums. The book was written in 1914 and is called ‘An Introduction to the Infinitesimal Calculus’ by GW Gaunt, hence the title of the painting. Not exactly bedtime reading! The bowl is ceramic with attractive colours of turquoise and brown which appealed to me as being unusual.
