A generous cluster of green grapes draped over a wedge of cheese, a simple wooden ledge, a folded cloth, and a glass of white wine catching the light. Against a deep velvety background, each element takes on a presence that asks you to slow down and savour a small, elegant moment.
What I wanted to capture: How light transforms ordinary surfaces; the translucence of grape skins, the subtle sheen on the wine, the porous softness of the cheese, and the cool smoothness of glass.
Balance through restraint: negative space amplifies the objects, while the cloth’s soft folds and the wood’s texture ground the composition.
A triangular flow leads the eye: grapes flow from left to centre, meet the cheese, and continue to the glass on the right. It’s calm and deliberate.
Textural contrast keeps the scene alive — glossy fruit, matte rind, reflective wine, and the cloth’s gentle folds — each surface contributing its own tactile story.
The dark background heightens colour and form, letting the pale yellows and greens read fresh and luminous.
I was pleased with how this painting turned out. It has achieved the objectives that I aimed for. I was particularly pleased with how the composition works, interesting and balanced.
