A crystal decanter, two tumblers and a pair of well-worn books sit against a deep, unobtrusive background. The scene is simple but the details demand attention: the cut of the glass, the way the liquor catches and bends light, the soft wear along the edges of the books. Together they create a mood of calm conversation and refined relaxation.

Technically, this work is about contrast and clarity. The dark field behind the arrangement lets the warmth of the whisky glow and the complex reflections within the crystal take centre stage. I focused on the subtle geometry of the glass cuts — those star-like facets become almost floral when lit — and on the way distilled liquid can act like a lens, compressing and inverting shapes. Rendering reflections and refractions is a lesson in patience: careful observation, layered colour, and precise edges are what bring the surfaces to life.

There’s a narrative here, too. Books suggest stories and accumulated knowledge; the decanter and glasses suggest companionship. Placed together, they hint at evenings spent reading and gentle conversation. I like to think the painting invites you into that space — to take a seat, lift a glass, and let the world slow for a moment.
